About Hank
The Operator Behind the Strategy.
I was born premature in East Los Angeles. One pound. Died three times. Made it anyway. That is not a metaphor — it is just where this starts.
Moved around as a kid. Started early. By the time most people were figuring out what they wanted to do, I was already doing it.
Faith has been the foundation since before I could speak — and it still is.
The rest of this page is the history that shaped how I work. Read it for that — not the biography, but what the biography means for the company that brings me in.
The Standard

Special Operations, 75th Ranger Regiment. Identifying details redacted out of respect for fellow operators.
The Army does not care how talented you are before you prove it.
You are handed a standard. You either meet it or you do not. There is no partial credit, no participation acknowledgment, and no one adjusting the standard to fit your comfort level. The standard is the standard.
That framing never left me.
In the 75th Ranger Regiment, the standard was not a motivational poster. It was operational. Specific. Enforced by the people standing next to you who were staking their lives on whether you met it.
I took that framing into every engagement I have run since. Not as a story I tell about myself. As the way I actually work.
Every company I take on gets the same thing Rangers give each other: preparation before contact, decision-making under pressure, and full ownership of the outcome. Not credit when it works and excuses when it does not. Ownership. The standard does not negotiate with circumstances.
The Craft
I started building websites at 16. Not as a hobby. As an asset.
By 2005 I was running paid search, SEO, CRO, and web builds — not in theory, across real campaigns with real budgets on the line. Million-dollar paid media accounts. In-house positions. Agency roles. Every discipline, multiple verticals. I did not specialize. I learned how all of it connected, because that is the only way to see where growth actually comes from.
I built a team of 15 at SEOP — years before I started my own agency. By then I could predict keyword rankings with near-100 percent accuracy and prove it live on client sales calls. The full-stack picture was clear. Most of what passes for marketing is noise. Pattern recognition is the skill. Everything else is execution.
I founded Digital Strategy Group in 2010. That foundation is what it runs on.
By 2019 I was already signing client communications under the title “Virtual Chief Digital Marketing Officer” — years before “Fractional CMO” became a category most CEOs could name. The titles kept changing as the market caught up. The work underneath them did not. Today it is the same discipline at a higher altitude: not running a marketing function, but finding what limits a company’s growth and directing the work that moves it.
The credential is not the craft. The credential is just evidence that the craft is real.
The Hard Part
I am going to tell you something most people in this position leave out.
From 2015 to 2020, I was not scaling. I was sustaining. The honest word is stagnant.
I moved DSG to Phoenix and tried to scale before the foundation could hold it. It broke. What I got out of it was an expensive education in what systems, vetting, and culture actually require — and what happens when you build without them.
I rebuilt the recruiting process from scratch. Then rebuilt it again. Then built the culture infrastructure that should have existed from the beginning.
The constraint was never ambition. It was structure — and for five years, no one owned it. I kept running past the break instead of stopping to name it. I was the one department that could not see itself.
When I say growth stalls at the constraint no one owns, I am not quoting a framework. I am describing my own company.
That is why I work with founders the way I do. The founder-led companies that call me are not struggling because they lack ambition. Something in the structure broke, and the person running it kept running past the break. I have been that person. The difference is what you do with the data.
By 2025 I had built what I had been missing: a documented operating system, and brands that compound on their own rather than only while I am standing over them. That is the lesson I carry into every company now. A business that grows only while the operator is in the seat is worth less than one that compounds without him. So I build through the team, never around it. The structure underneath is the work — not just the strategy on top.
The System
Everything I have built runs on a system.
The Hank Hugh Method™ is how I work every engagement: diagnose the constraint, align leadership around it, direct execution, measure honestly, and build the capability into the company. The DSG Command Stack is the execution engine beneath it. It covers organic search, GEO, AEO, paid media, content, conversion, email, SMS, and reputation — not as separate services with separate vendors and separate reporting, but as one integrated architecture with one senior strategist accountable for how all of it connects.
GEO and AEO are not add-ons. They are the current frontier. Most businesses have no presence in AI-generated search — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews — and that is a current revenue leak, not a future problem. The companies running the Command Stack show up where their buyers are now searching. That is the system working.
The Command Stack is proprietary. I am not going to publish how it runs here, and I would be skeptical of any operator who would. What I will tell you is what it produces: a growth infrastructure that compounds over time instead of resetting every quarter.
Most companies I look at have one of two problems. Either they have no system — running on instinct, whoever is loudest wins. Or they have a system that was built for a company half their current size. Both are solvable. Neither is complicated once you can see the whole picture clearly. That is what I am built to do.
